5 Pitching Drills You Can Do with a Squid Throw

5 Pitching Drills You Can Do with a Squid Throw

If you’ve ever worked on pitching mechanics, chances are you’ve seen or even done the classic towel drill. It’s been around forever - simple, effective, and designed to help pitchers build muscle memory without actually throwing a baseball. The only problem? Towels don’t exactly replicate the feel of a ball.

That’s where the Squid Throw comes in. Think of it as the towel drill… upgraded. It’s designed to give pitchers the same safe mechanics work while adding weight, resistance, and a feel that’s much closer to the real thing. Below are five drills you can do right now to sharpen your mechanics, build strength, and groove better habits - all with the Squid Throw.

1. The Classic Reach Drill

  • Purpose: Reinforces extension and follow-through.
  • How to do it: Set up just like the towel drill. Mark a target (a glove, chair, or wall) about where a catcher’s mitt would be. Work on hitting that target with the Squid Throw. Focus on full extension and finishing over your front leg.

2. Balance Point Hold

  • Purpose: Improves stability and timing out of the windup or stretch.
  • How to do it: Lift to your balance point and hold for 2–3 seconds. Then drive forward and deliver the Squid Throw. The added weight helps you control your body while staying explosive.

3. Stride Length Check

  • Purpose: Grooves consistent stride length and direction.
  • How to do it: Use tape or chalk to mark your ideal stride length on the ground. Throw the Squid Throw while landing on your target mark. Consistency here helps build repeatable mechanics.

4. Glove Side Wall Drill

  • Purpose: Keeps pitchers from flying open too soon.
  • How to do it: Stand next to a wall with your glove side facing it. Perform your delivery with the Squid Throw, making sure your glove doesn’t crash into the wall. This teaches staying closed longer.

5. Explosive Finish Drill

  • Purpose: Trains velocity and power through the motion.
  • How to do it: Set a target at full extension and throw the Squid Throw as explosively as possible. Focus on driving through your hips and finishing with energy. The resistance adds load to your mechanics, making real baseballs feel easier.

Why It Works

The Squid Throw takes a decades-old staple of pitching development and brings it into the modern game. Instead of swinging a towel around, pitchers can train with a tool that provides real resistance, mimics the weight of a ball, and can be used anywhere.

If you’re serious about building better mechanics, protecting your arm, and getting more out of every rep grab a Squid Throw.
